Day 30: Romans 8:12-17

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Romans 8:12-17 (NRSV)

My favorite line from today’s devotional is the one that says “All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” What Paul is telling us is that when we receive the Holy Spirit, we begin to recognize God as our Father! And the presence of the Spirit in our lives makes an actual difference - the Spirit leads us, guides our decisions, and whispers quietly to us in the midst of whatever we face.

Sometimes it is easy to think of God in “Heavenly Father” terms, but that language seems to make Him distant in some ways. The reality is, when we surrender to Jesus and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are adopted into God’s family! We actually become his children! In this passage, Paul says the Spirit allows us to call God “Abba! Father!” These are the same words Jesus uses to refer to his Father in Mark 14:36. The implication is clear - We are no less the children of God than Jesus is.

Have you accepted your status as a son or daughter of the Almighty God? Or is it still difficult for you to conceive of the idea that the Creator of the universe has made you His heir? I pray today that each one of us would understand the depth of the relationship we can have with our true Father, who loves us and chose us to be his children.
